Ovumia’s and Nova Vita’s research director Andres Salumets has been appointed professor at the Karolinska Institutet

Professor Andres Salumets, who is an infertility treatment expert in Estonia, was appointed Professor of Reproductive Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet. Professor Salumets also joined the Ovumia and Nova Vita infertility clinics as a research director, to provide the best treatment to Finnish and Estonian patients.

It is recognised that Professor Salumets is the first Estonian professor at the Karolinska Institutet, which is one of the largest and most prestigious medical universities in Europe. Salumets will begin working in the Institutet’s CLINTEC (Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) department.

With the aim of bringing the latest infertility treatment options to Finnish and Estonian patients, Professor Salumets also co-operates with the Ovumia Group clinics and in Nova Vita clinic in Finland and in Estonia.

‘The daily work of infertility clinics is complex and requires the rapid introduction of medical research achievements to ensure the quality and effectiveness of patients’ care’, explained Chairman of Board of the Nova Vita and Ovumia clinics, docent Pekka Sillanaukee, as he commented on the new position taken by Professor Salumets.

Professor Andres Salumets said that the new beginning of co-operation with specially the Nova Vita clinic was emotionally very positive for him, since as the first embryologist at Nova Vita he also contributed to the birth of the clinic’s first child 25 years ago. ‘In recent years, I have mainly been engaged in the development of technologies that make infertility treatment more effective. Therefore, co-operation with the Nova Vita clinic is an important opportunity for me to get involved in clinical work, which in its direct communication with patients always provides positive emotions’, Salumets said.

Professor Salumets has been treating infertility for over twenty years. In the last decade, he has paid more attention to the development of infertility treatment technologies. At the moment, Andres Salumets also works as Professor of Reproductive Medicine at the University of Tartu and as a Member of the Management Board of the Competence Centre on Health Technologies, which is a laboratory medicine company. In addition, Andres Salumets is the Visiting Professor at the University of Helsinki and the President of the Baltic Fertility Society.

The Nova Vita clinic is an infertility treatment clinic in Tallinn, which has been a member of the OVUMIA chain of fertility clinics since 2017. Founded in 1995, Nova Vita was the first private clinic for infertility treatment in Estonia. Since its establishment, Nova Vita has considered it important to contribute to the development of infertility treatment technologies. As one of the first, Nova Vita started infertility treatment using the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) method. The staff of the Nova Vita clinic has participated in several research studies, as a result of which several innovations have entered clinical use, which have improved the effectiveness and quality of infertility treatment.
