Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about fertility tests or treatments, or if you are wondering about something concerning them. We will be happy to talk it over with you!
Many of our customers are interested in the same issues. That is why we have collected some frequently asked questions and their answers here.
How do I calculate my menstrual cycle?
The length of the menstrual cycle is calculated from the first day of your period with proper flow to the first day of your next period. A slow or brown flow is not considered a proper flow.
Can I drink a glass of wine during the treatment? What effect does smoking have?
Both smoking and heavy consumption of alcohol are harmful when trying to get pregnant, but one glass of wine during the treatment is unlikely to have much effect. Smoking has been found to clearly weaken the ability of sperm to fertilise eggs and it also impairs the quality of eggs. We recommend you stop smoking right away when you decide that you want to have a baby.
Does my husband/partner being overweight have any effect on the quality of his semen/sperm?
Being overweight has been found to reduce fertility in both men and women. Being overweight or underweight prolongs the starting of pregnancy, impairs treatment results and increases the risk of miscarriage. Men who are overweight are more often found to have reduced sperm production and sperm motility than regular weight men.
How careful should I be about taking the hormone injections at the same time of day every day?
We recommend you take your hormone injections as close to the same time of day every day as possible, varying no more than 1–2 hours. The injection that causes ovulation should be taken at the exact time given.
Can I use prescription-free anti-inflammatory painkillers after egg retrieval before the day of the embryo transfer?
In connection with your egg retrieval your doctor will give you instructions on what medication is allowed.
Will the vaginal progesterone capsule be absorbed even though so much of it trickles out?
Progesterone inserted in the vagina is quickly absorbed through the mucous membrane. The majority of the capsule’s contents consist of a binding agent that dissolves and flows out as a result of body heat. This trickling may be inconvenient, but it causes no risk to the potency of the medicinal substance itself.
What age people do you treat, are there any age limits?
Fertility varies from one person to the next, and therefore we consider each person’s need for treatment and their prognosis individually. At Ovumia, the age limit for a woman receiving treatment is 47 years. At our sister clinic Nova Vita in Tallinn, the age limit is 50 years.
Is a semen analysis necessary?
Semen analysis is the first examination performed on men. For the best results, it is a good idea to analyse the quality of the semen before starting the actual fertility treatments.
What kind of effects will the hormones have on me?
The hormones used to treat infertility usually have very few side effects. The most serious side effect during the treatment is the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which involves the development of too many eggs in the ovaries. This is rare and usually passes in 1–2 weeks.
Are all the examinations performed at the clinic?
All the examinations are performed at the clinic. Some minor examinations, such as blood tests and some of the follow-up examinations (e.g. ultrasound scans) can be performed elsewhere; for example, by a gynaecologist in your local area.
How many times will I have to visit the clinic during the treatment?
The number of times you will have to visit the clinic depends on your treatment. In vitro fertilisation involves an average of 4–5 visits. If you have to travel far to visit us – if you live abroad, for example – we will try to minimise your number of visits.
Is there a queue for donor cell treatments?
At Ovumia, there is no queue for donor cell treatments. Treatments involving donor eggs can be implemented either through a fresh egg donation treatment cycle or by using Ovumia’s egg bank. At Ovumia, we also have our own sperm bank and we offer the option of using sperm from Danish sperm banks.
